The three R’s / Repetition, repetition, repetition
– The Fall, 1977
The greatest modernizers inaugurate their career with
a backward leap, and a renaissance proceeds through
a return to the past, a recycling, and hence a revolution.
[...] Behind the ‘re-’ of reformation, republic or
revolution, there is a hand flicking through the pages of
a book, from the end back to the beginning.
– Régis Debray, 2007
Commissioned to create a piece on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of Annet Gelink Gallery (Amsterdam), we proposed to develop a full series of multiples – all multiples carrying a word starting with the prefix ‘Re-’. In that sense, the ‘Re-‘ refers both to the nature of the multiple (repetition), and to the continuity of the gallery practice (regeneration, recycling).
The eventual group of multiples (created by us, and distributed by the gallery) consisted of a postcard, a postage stamp, a set of foam fingers, a paper cup, a tote bag, a roll of duct tape, a name tag, an A1-sized poster, a flag, and an oversized T-shirt.
Most of the objects refer to the typical paraphernalia of the gallery circuit (name tags, paper cups, tote bags, etc.) – while the foam hand (the pointing finger that says “Representation”) is a slight homage to Ad Reinhardt’s iconic “What do YOU represent?” cartoon, from 1946.
